Acid reflux: symptoms and when to seek care

Heartburn and regurgitation are common reflux symptoms. Not every episode of chest pain is reflux.

Educational guide based on the sources below · 30 October 2026

How reflux may present

Nausea, cough or hoarseness may occur alongside regurgitation. Obesity, pregnancy and a hiatus hernia can increase the likelihood of symptoms.

Assessment and treatment

Frequent or persistent symptoms, difficulty swallowing, ongoing vomiting, unexplained weight loss or signs of bleeding need evaluation. Medication, endoscopy and surgery are considered individually.

Frequently asked questions

Does reflux always cause heartburn?

No. Some people have other symptoms without obvious heartburn.

What should I do about reflux after sleeve surgery?

Tell your surgical team about new or worsening symptoms. Treatment depends on the cause and your surgical history.

When should I not wait for an appointment?

New or severe chest pain, especially with breathlessness or sweating, requires emergency assessment. Gastrointestinal bleeding also requires urgent care.
