Common symptoms
Pain in the upper abdomen or under the right ribs may last more than half an hour to several hours and be accompanied by nausea. Ultrasound and blood tests may be needed.
Warning signs and treatment
Severe pain, fever and chills or jaundice need urgent assessment. Symptomatic stones are often treated by removing the gallbladder. Bile duct stones may require ERCP.
Frequently asked questions
Do painless gallstones need surgery?
Often not. Individual circumstances and examination findings determine the decision.
Can diet remove gallstones?
Avoiding trigger foods may reduce symptoms, but it does not replace treatment of symptomatic stones or bile duct obstruction.
Can rapid weight loss increase gallstone risk?
Yes. Gallstones can also occur after weight-loss surgery. Ask your team about prevention and follow-up.
