Symptoms and assessment

Many cysts cause no symptoms. Pelvic pain, pressure or bloating may occur. Ultrasound, cyst size and appearance, age and symptoms help guide monitoring or treatment.

When urgent care is needed

Sudden severe pelvic pain, especially with nausea or vomiting, needs urgent assessment. Rupture or ovarian torsion may be possible. Assessment and treatment belong with a gynaecologist.

Frequently asked questions

Does an ovarian cyst mean cancer?

No. Many are benign, but their appearance and individual circumstances need assessment.

Does every cyst require an operation?

No. Size, persistence, symptoms and the likelihood of malignancy influence the decision.

Will weight loss make a cyst disappear?

That cannot be promised. The cyst type and any hormonal disorder must first be established.
